Setting Up a Linux Server

I'm setting up a new Linux server to be the home for windley.com, providing support for my blog and other related activities. This topic guide chronicles my adventure.

Initial Setup

• Configuring RAID Level 1 A remote server is difficult to backup. Using RAID-1 creates a mirrored drive to guard against disk failures.

• Setting Up a Serial Console Remote servers usually run headless and so having a console on the serial port can come in handy.

• Configuring Linux Notes on things to do to make Linux ready to host Apache and run a Web site.

• Building Apache Notes on building Apache with PHP and SSL.

• Setting Up a SAMBA Server Setting up a simple Samba server and mounting to it from Mac OS X using mount_smbfs.

Other Interesting Configurations

• Logical Volume Manager Create logical volumes that span multiple disks. Use removable IDE drives and LVM instead of tapes for back-up.
